The Agreement-In-Principle (AIP)
On October 18, 2016, the Antoine Nation together with other Algonquins of Ontario, the Crown in Right of Canada and Crown in Right of Ontario signed an Agreement-in-Principle (AIP) concerning an Algonquins of Ontario eventual treaty, providing for a large capital transfer of many hundreds of millions of dollars, as well as over 100,000 acres of land, and confirmed legal jurisdiction for the Algonquins of Ontario over many issues of lands, forestry, harvesting, parks and protected areas, heritage and culture, and self-government.
If a Final Agreement is achieved through the next phase of negotiations, and if it is ratified by Antoine Nation members and other Algonquins of Ontario members and by the federal Parliament and provincial Legislature, it will take the form of a modern-day treaty setting out Algonquin Aboriginal and treaty rights protected under Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982.
The Antoine Nation will keep its Members updated on the progress of Final Agreement negotiations, and be available to answer questions from Members about any draft Final Agreement long before it is put to a ratification vote, as being able to make an informed choice about whether to agree to or reject a Final Agreement is key to the future of the Antoine Nation and its Members.
